Three persons from Mizoram drowned in R. Kolodyne

SIAHA, Feb.13 (Maraland Today) - Three persons from Niawhtlang, Mizoram, India were drowned in River Kolodyne on Monday when they tried to cross the river from Chin state, Myanmar to Mizoram, India on their way back to their village after attending a Church conference there.

"Mr. Jonathan, 25 and his wife lost their balance while trying to cross the biggest river in Mizoram that also acts as the international boundary between India and Myanmar though one family could cross the river ahead of them without any problem," an eye witness was quoted as saying.

"When another person Mr. Lalrinsanga, 35, who was behind them saw them struggling and tried to save them but instead he was grabbed by them and he too lost his balance and drowned," added a well-placed source.

Reports indicate that the Church members were on their way back to Mizoram after attending a United Pentecostal Church (UPC) North East Conference held at Civui, also spelled Chivui village in Chin state, Myanmar.

All the three dead bodies were found and rescued from the river. They were brought to the village for burial.

Sources said leaders of Mara Thyutlia Py (MTP) Headquarters, the biggest youth NGO in Saiha districts have rushed to the village to render all possible help.

The state government as well as the New Delhi cannot turn a blind eye to this kind of avoidable accidents. Every year, dozens of people lost their lives while trying to cross the river Kolodyne that separates the same ethnic people - Mizos of Mizoram and Chins of Chin State Myanmar.

Though the Indian government allows Myanmarese nationals to cross the border up to 16 kilometres inside India but provision like a simple bridge is not made for them and this kind of accident keeps repeating each year. The governments in both the countries should do something so that this kind of man-made accident will not occur anymore.
